Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators in the Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot
Published in Paperback by Random House Children's Books (May, 1978)
Author: Robert Arthur
Average review score:

Three Investigators Books are Fantastic!!
I used to read my older brother's Three Investigator books when he borrowed them from the school library. I so wanted to live in a trailer with a secret escape hatch like Jupiter had.
I have bought as many books as I could find for my son who is eleven and loves reading about Jupiter, Bob and Pete's adventures. We look in every secondhand shop we can find and are slowly getting the entire series.

Please bring the Three Investigators Back!!!!
I, too, read all of the books when I was a child. Now that I'm looking for books to give to friends' children, I discover that these marvelous books are out of print! I beseech the publisher to re-issue them asap. The stuttering parrot has remained with me all these years, so much so that when I hear a reference to Sherlock Holmes, it is the stuttering parrot's "to to be" that immediately pops into my mind. On behalf of a bookwormwho wants to share with the next generation, please bring the boys back! The three investigators may not have been classic literature, but they brought me tremendous pleasure.

Should not be out of print!
The Three Investigators series was the best set of mysteries I ever read, in addition to Agatha Christie's. I read all of them I could find. And yet, years later, I decided to look them up and not a single library had them anymore. These books should not be out of print! There is something special in Jupiter, Bob, and Pete's (I think I got the names right) detective agency, and the mysteries are especially unique and intriguing. This book is especially memorable. To-to-to be, or not to-to-to be... And that's not the only parrot that's odd

All About Hedge Funds : The Easy Way to Get Started
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (15 October, 2002)
Authors: Robert A. Jaeger and Robert, Ph.D. Jaeger
Average review score:

Fantastic overview of the industry
This book presents a fantastic overview of the hedge fund industry. The intended target audience is hedge fund investors, which is reinforced by the author's credentials as an executive in a "Fund of Funds". In addition, the book would be very useful as an interview to financial markets, useful for business students interested in careers in trading or hedge funds.

The book starts with a broad overview of market theory, covering efficient markets, diversification theory and strengths and weaknesses of the "Random Walk" theory. The book then moves to an overview of the various investment tools available to hedge funds, such as going long and short on stock prices and volatility. (If you'd like to know in plain english what being "long volatility" means, this is a good book for you!) The book then covers legal, financial and operational details of running a fund. Lastly, it covers the various types of funds, such as equity funds and event driven funds. The scope of the material covers financial institutions such as investment banks and brokers that support hedge funds.

In summary, this was a very informative introductory text on both hedge funds and markets. It will be very useful to both new investors in hedge funds, as well as students of financial markets. The math is well explained, and there are only a few tough technical sections.

Enjoy!

Excellent Primer on Hedge Funds and the Industry
This book delivered what I was looking for and more. I needed an introduction to hedge funds and the industry and the book does an excellent job of providing this information in complete and concise detail. In addition, the book also gives a good overview of portfolio theory and how it relates to actual practice. There is also a section that describes the prevalent hedge fund strategies with historical performances. I highly recommend this book to those interested in starting their own fund or wishing to work in the industry.

Best book I've read on hedge funds
"All About Hedge Funds" is lucid enough for beginners, sophisticated enough for those in the know, and written with a clarity and intelligence rare in the world of money books. Jaeger avoids hype while providing plenty of insight into this often misunderstood investment tool.

Life altering tale
May I take a moment of your time, please, to try and impress
upon you the value of this book? At the confronting age of
16, sitting in an old house in Switzerland, a tempest of white
and wind swirling outside, I delved into this tale...
I was drawn in immediately, which shocked me, I was never the
book adolescent. A feeling of manipulation took hold of
me, I couldn't leave the story alone, even when not reading it,
it was there with me, inside me. This book inspired me to try
at the world of writing. The torturous fate of the Cathars is heart-wrenchingly displayed in vivid imagery. Romantic love is
depicted as it really is in life...
I am not expressing myself well here, please buy this book

Big...Thrilling...Spectacular historical..Highly Recommended
Historical fiction has romance, intrigue, spies, torture, war and the Knights Templar. Takes place during the Inquistion and France's religious crusade into Egypt. The book revolves around a wandering troubadour/knight and the two women he has loved, both unattainable; and the knight he hates and wants to kill, but cannot because he is close to the King.

Very historical detailed book.

A very enjoyable book...Don't be thrown off by the title, you'll find out what it means while reading the book.

Highly Recommended!!

All Things Are Lights is full of romance and adventure.
This is must read if you are a die-hard romantic! Enjoy!!!

The Almanac of British Politics
Published in Paperback by Croom Helm, Ltd. (August, 1983)
Author: Robert James Waller
Average review score:

A must for anyone interested in British politics
This is an excellent, highly readable book for anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of British politics. Each constituency is profiled in-depth, and I reach for this book every time a by-election is caused. This new edition is highly welcome, as the old edition was made hopelessly out of date by the 1997 Labour landslide. Buy this book, and you'll know which seats Peter Snow means the next time he says "Now let's have a look at our Swingometer!"

Finally Updated to reflect the 1997 Election
Excellent resource for British Politics. Glad to see it has been updated to reflect the sweeping 1997 Labour Victory and Boundary Commission changes. A must for anyone interested in British Politics.

The bible of british politics
Excellent review of british politics. Gets even better with time. If you are interested in what is going on in a major player in europe this is the book to get. Provides excellent portraits of all the major players in this parliament and of Tony Blairs government.

Almighty Me
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (April, 1991)
Author: Robert Bausch
Average review score:

This book is infinitely better written than my review.
Never mind that this book will inevitably lead you to On The Way Home (Bausch's searing novel about a family left to deal with the aftermath when their son returns from Vietnam). Never mind that if you are easily confused it will ALSO lead you to wonderful books by Richard Bausch. Never mind that it is some of the funniest material I have ever read. Especially never mind that the library has issued a bench warrant for my arrest since I can't bring myself to give it back.

If you are a human being who has ever questioned faith, religion, the meaning of God, and the Universe you need to read this book.

If you do not fit the above category, congratulations on being the first animal to surf the web!

Bob Bausch - Master of the Universe
Bob Bausch was my favorite Professor in College. This book is great. I wish the great Chet would come and pay me a visit.

Very deep book. Not just a lot of humour. It's full of philosophy and ideas about the way things are.

Way to go Bob! Your the man!

Thought provoking with a splash of humor.
The subject of becoming God for a year is mind boggling in itself. You must understand the consequences of your actions. The book slightly gets boring in the middle, however I found myself reading faster to find out how he solves certain problems. After a slow middle part of the story, the ending is very revealing and extremely thought provoking. I enjoyed it so much that I quickly forgot how the middle was "slightly boring". There was humor throughout the book but I found the subject matter more intriguing. Read this book... Can anyone suggest books with similiar topics?

The Ancient Maya
Published in Paperback by Stanford Univ Pr (September, 1994)
Authors: Robert J. Sharer and Sylvanus Griswold Ancient Maya Morley
Average review score:

great archaeological writing
Wow. This is the definitive book on the Maya. Whether youre a student or a scholar, its got almost everything. Very readable prose, good organization, and excellent photographs. In fact, they are almost the best part. The organization is excellent providing first an overview, chapter by chapter of major events in Maya history, and then a dissection of every major aspect of Maya life. If the Maya are your thing, dont miss this book. Great value for money.

The authority on the Ancient Maya
This book has had many re-printings, and for good reason. It is THE english language book that covers the anicient Maya in one volume. This book was used as a text in a class I took in Mesoamerican archaeology. I found it easy to read and very interesting. Great for a travel companion. I used it extensively while traveling through Yucatán and Chiapas.

Well researched.
This book is well researched and very informative.

The Art of Executive Protection
Published in Hardcover by Noble House (June, 1997)
Author: Robert L. Oatman
Average review score:

Definitive Professional manual
As someone who works in the field of executive Protection, for the past 7 years in Algeria, I found this book both educational and entertaining.
A lot of the books published about this field of work appear to be targeted at people who have watched the film bodyguard and are attracted to the profession for the glamour in my opinion.
For this reason it is rare I purchase a book on the subject. I made an exception in this case as it was recommended by another professional in the field, and was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of the contents.
My father once said if you only learn one thing from a book, it has been worth buying, I learned a lot from this book, and in my opinion it is worth its weight in gold...

Talking the talk and walking the walk!
My reluctance to purchase a book on executive protection was finally overcome when hearing of Mr. Oatmans work. As a Director and operator of South Africa's premier executive protection company I am happy to say the the man has hit the nail on the head. I highly recommend this work to both newcommers and seasoned operators in this amazing industry. It should also be compulsory reading for the security managers of every large corporate in the world - well done for putting a lot of professionals thoughts into writing -Sir!

An inside look at the REAL world of executive protection
As a guidebook for protection specialists or a primer for developing your own corporate protection program, Mr. Oatman has supplied the foundation necessary to make the right decisions. Everything from planning proper "advance" work to putting the principle to bed at the end of the day, Oatman leaves nothing to chance. All the myths of the professional bodyguard are destroyed, paving the way for the new mindset of executive protector. No longer the gorilla in an ill fitting suit, the modern protector could very well be the executive assistant, and often is.

Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way
Published in Hardcover by Greenleaf Book Group (01 December, 1999)
Authors: Sandra J. Philipson and Robert Takatch
Average review score:

Delightful fun for kids and dog lovers!
This is a sweet book about two family pets--Springer spaniels--and how they communicate when Annie, the older dog, loses her leg to cancer. The mischievious younger dog Max brings a smile to all with his antics and attitude. This is an excellent tool for getting kids to use their imagination, talk about writing, mental and visual images. This book sets the stage for the author's later books with more adventures for Max and Annie.

"Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way"......ALL THUMBS UP!!
I had heard about the book on a television program which showed how this book was being read in hospitals to children who were cancer patients in order to help them understand the reasons for surgery, treatment, etc. So I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter after learning that I had myself had breast cancer, and required a mastectomy.

In this book, Annie, a dog, gets cancer. Her owners take her to the veterinarian for surgery. When Annie comes home, she only has three legs. Max, her dog brother, doesn't understand this. Annie explains that she lost her leg in order to save her life!

This book is wonderful! It really helped my daughter understand my situation in a way that only good children's literature can!
(I am a 14 year veteran public school teacher, by the way, so I know good children's literature when I see it!)

If you, your child, a family member, your pet, or anyone else you know is going through this horrible disease, get this book and read it to your child!

(I am happy to report that I am now cancer-free, by the way!)

Dog-gone Cancer
I teach a summer class about different dog breeds. I use episodes of Breed All About It from Animal Planet channel. The episode was about Springer Spaniels, and this book as well as the author were featured. This inspired me to purchase the books for an after-school program I run. I love dogs and I am also an EMT, this is a great way to incoporate both of my interests into the program and help those children who made need to deal with this issue at a point in their lives.

Apollo 15: The NASA Mission Reports, Volume One
Published in Paperback by Apogee Books (August, 2001)
Authors: David Scott, James C., Dr. Fletcher, Apogee Books, and Robert Godwin
Average review score:

Only One Flaw.
The Nasa Mission Report series are FANTASTIC products. I cannot more highly recommend them. BUT: they only have one flaw. Getting the CD-Rom out of their tight package on the rear page runs the risk of badly damaging the back cover if you're not careful. And that's what I unfortunately did to my copy of Apollo 15. I suggest using a sharp letter-opener very carefully to pierce and open the seal at the top of the CD-Rom's plastic sleeve. What's this book/CD-Rom like? The range of documents and video clips is excellent and the photos are not too bad, but I've seen clearer versions of some of these pictures elsewhere. The video of "In The Mountains Of The Moon" is disappointingly fuzzy and pixelated, unlike the rest of the clips which are very good. Roll on Volume Two!!

The NASA Mission Reports
From the press kit to the technical crew debriefing and everything in between, this book thoroughly describes the Apollo 15 mission. This mission was the first to use the Lunar Rover, the first to venture into a lunar mountain range, and the first to do major geologic work. This book uses the archives of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to document all aspects of the mission. The accompanying CD-ROM contains hundreds of images of the moon, hours of video of the moon walkers, and other interesting information about the mission. The press kit contains all the information given to reporters, including a step-by-step breakdown of the mission; this offers readers a complete, highly detailed study of the Apollo mission. Almost a third of the book is a transcript of the technical debriefing, interesting both because of the personal details of the mission rarely seen by the public and the interactions between the men who were on the mission. This book, along with the others in the series, forms an excellent technical history of the manned space program. General readers; lower-division undergraduates.

Another Great Book From Robert Godwin And Apogee Books
This book appears to have been released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission and contains a great deal of information about this extremely important lunar exploration mission. This mission was the first extended duration lunar exploration mission (3 days on the Moon's surface) and featured the lunar rover, which greatly extended the area that the two astronauts could explore. This Apollo mission is considered to be one of humanity's greatest voyages of exploration. David Scott commanded the Apollo 15 mission and contributes a few introductory pages.

The book opens with the usual NASA mission press kit. Unlike the earlier Apollo 14 press kit, this press kit is significantly larger, due to the increased emphasis on the scientific exploration of the Moon. The next portion of the book contains an excellent section titled "On the Moon With Apollo 15." This section focuses on the geology of the Hadley Rille/Apennine Mountains landing site, the science experiments that will be conducted on the surface and the equipment and tools that will be used to accomplish these tasks. This portion of the book was published separately by NASA in 1971 and a used copy now sells for around 25$. The next section of the book, the Pre-flight Mission Operations Report, presents an overview of planned timelines (work plan), while the next section, the Post-flight Mission Operations Report, presents the actual timelines, points out the discrepancies between the two timelines and describes any problems with the hardware

The crew debrief section, which is about 100 pages long, contains the crew comments and feelings about various parts of the mission and for the most part avoids the technical language that many of the NASA documents include; however there are several sections where the crew practically talks in acronyms. The crew debrief contains crew comments from the suiting up phase to the landing, plus comments about the training (did it or did not help the crew). Dave Scott and Jim Irwin dominate most of the crew debrief, since most of the questioning and mission focused on the lunar surface operations; however, Al Worden has a lot to say about his photographic survey of the moon and his deep space EVA (the first one ever conducted). I always find the crew debriefing quite enjoyable, because it is the closest thing to being there and you get two or three first had view points of various aspects of the mission.

The enclosed CD (be careful it is hard to get out) contains a lot of color and black and white photographs, several NASA films and an extremely interesting feature on the development of the Lunar Rover.

Some general information that might be useful.

1) These reports are just scanned-in documents from previously released NASA press kits, etc., In order to preserve the spirit of the original reports, all typographical and grammatical errors have NOT been fixed.

2) Proceeds from the book goes to "The Watch" an asteroid impact research project of the Space Frontier Foundation. In other words, Apogee Books is making very little off the sale of US government produced books.

3) Many people have asked why the post mission reports are not included. Since NASA has published many books with hundred of pages (The NASA SP series), and the data from these missions is still being analyzed, it would be impossible to do.

Archie's Way : A Memoir of Friendship and Craftsmanship
Published in Hardcover by The Lyons Press (01 September, 1998)
Average review score:

A Touching Memoir
This short memoir is a true love story. The author loves both shopwork and his friend Archie. It is hard to tell which this book is more about. You need not be a shop - either metalworking or woodworking - enthusiast to enjoy the book. Archie was a truly interesting guy and the author portrays him well. The memoir is appropriately brief. Mr. Probert does not waste time nor is there any hint of self-aggrandizement (always refreshing in a memoir). An enjoyable quick read.

A rewarding glimpse into the mind of an engaging character.
Some of us are lucky enough to find a true mentor in our lives, someone who opens our eyes to a special world, and in so doing, gives us a glimpse of ourselves. Such a person is Archie Raasch, the subject of Richard Probert's book Archie's Way. A man of few words and many talents, Archie is an unforgettable character whose down-to-earth wisdom is vanishing from our hurried world.

Archie's Way sparkles with the joy of discovery implicit in new relationships. Probert's mastery of visual, sound and textural detail gives the book sensory complexity without being overbearing. A few of the mechanical descriptions, though were a little too technical for one unfamiliar with the landscape of the workshop. But this was only a minor flaw and did not distract from my overall enjoyment of the book.

There is a line of tension throughout the book that is skillfully drawn so as to tantalize the reader to discover the true nature of Archie and to tap the wellspring of his enigmatic quirkiness. The later chapters move from the technica of the machine shop to the mysteries of the wood shop and the labyrinthian paths of Archie's woods. There amidst the fragrance and beauty of the natural world, the layers of Archie's character are respectfully revealed, the book takes on a warmth, much like the patina of well-worked wood.

Probert is an engaging storyteller with a wonderful sense of character. Archie's Way is a rewarding glimpse into a sadly disappearing way of life.

A delightful story of friendship and human dignity
Wonderfully crafted story depicting life in a small midwestern town. Reminded me of my own father's workshop. He and Dick Probert would have been great friends. Causes one to ponder what really is important and how values are formed. As an instructor in a technical college, I would like to have this book on the reading list for every student and faculty member.
